The Class Discussion

Below is our classroom, a mashup of technology, pedagogy, and the humanities. A Twitter timeline captures our avatars and conversations. A blogroll takes the attendance and assignments. Bookmark this page and class is just a click away, any time of the day, from any point in the world.

You can also search for the hashtag #506iv with various software apps for your desktop, tablet, and smartphone including Twitterrific, Hootsuite, and Tweetdeck. Utilize the #506iv hashtag yourself, and you can participate.

Whether you are a freelancer who can check in throughout the day or someone working two jobs and offline for much of the week, class is always here, a waiting audience and semester-long question: “Can you engage us with your words alone?”

This is the new classroom:

The #506iv hashtag creates a virtual classroom:

Just as I use the hashtag #506iv to unite my students’ class #conversation and course work across time and place as creative #examples for the next semester’s roster, I also use #hashtags to identify their #assignments and sort them under the course’s major concepts and #seven chapters. I’ve come to see many of these #themes as part of a new #grammar of interactive writing and communication. Every online #message succeeds or fails based on its grasp of #games, #tweets, #avatars, #links, #algorithms, #wikis, and #blogs. Don’t understand? Then follow this account.

#506iv is my course #hashtag. It’s also my virtual #classroom. It only trends for my #roster of students. To anyone else, it’s gibberish. The sequence of numbers and letters is unlikely to appear in a different #context. Thus it allows us to create the small, invested, and #idiosyncratic dialogue that leads to unique #ideas. Yet it’s also open to the #public should our words catch the #attention of an expert with thoughts to add.
Come on in.

Start over does not mean start from scratch. It’s not that tired January cliché; “New Year, New You.” It means accepting old you—that your mistakes are your #experience. Every sunrise gives us the strength to begin again in a #cycle of ups and downs that rolls forward. Accept the day and night, weeks and seasons, cold and hibernation, and that #spring is coming. Even the best of us are rough drafts. Even masters think of their masterpieces as unfinished #work. Cultivate your #drafts that one might someday become a #masterpiece for someone else. Stop waiting for the new you. Enjoy the work-in-process. “New Year, Beta You.”
